Dee Zee Fuel Tank Gravity Feed With Electric Valve

Topic: deezee aux fuel tank
Posted By: lee worsdell on 03/28/18 05:24am Wondering if any one has a tank installed 40 gallon aux. need to no how long it would tank to fill from one to the other. I have had the valve open for over an hour and it hardly moved the gauge
Posted By: WeBeFulltimers on 03/28/18 06:35am Something is not right with yours. I have had a 40 gal Dee Zee gravity flow in my 2012 F350 PSD for 3 years with no problems. I can tow our 16,800 lb Montana with the valve open and the flow will keep up with trucks consumption which is 11.5 mpg average.

Posted By: lee worsdell on 03/28/18 07:31am they say not to pull with it open on the newer trucks gmc the worst for throwing a code. but at the rate its flowing when iam towing it should be ok . going to try it in a few weeks heading to Bristol for the race
Posted By: corvettekent on 03/28/18 08:45am Is your new tank vented? I'm thinking you need to run a vent hose between the two tanks.

Posted By: Jim&Sharon on 03/28/18 08:56am I don't have a DeeZee, but my "Transfer fuel," 50 gal. gravity feed, Aux tank, will refill my 30 some gal. truck tank in a couple hours while I am driving.

I Do have a vent on my aux tank, Don't know if it's needed.

Like others have said,The truck computer doesn't understand why the truck is moving, but the truck fuel gauge is not emptying, so the fuel gauge defaults to empty. I ignore it because I know I have at least 50 gal. more fuel. The gauge will reset the next time I turn the ignition switch.

Where have you seen that?

Posted By: Bionic Man on 03/28/18 09:19am I have a 60 gallon RDS. I usually just run with it open full time. If I have it shut off, and then open the valve when I am at say half a tank and continue driving, it will keep up with the rate of burn but I don't usually see it "gaining"on my fuel gauge while I am driving.
Posted By: gwalter on 03/28/18 10:35am I have the 40 gal DeeZee tank. It will show an increase on my gauge as I go down the road.

Posted By: 2naEagle on 03/28/18 12:56pm I've had a RDS on a 2008 and 2017 Ford no problem with fuel gauge. Open it up at a rest stop and drive on.
Posted By: F-TROUP on 03/28/18 01:40pm I installed a inexpensive electric fuel pump to fill my main tank from the aux tank and put the switch on the dash.
Posted By: prfssr on 03/29/18 05:11am I have a Lund 50 gallon aux. gravity fed tank. I installed it about 1 year ago. I have a solenoid in line along with a switch in the cab of the truck to turn on and off (open/close). I drilled out a hole in my filler neck and welded a bung to it. Tested for leaks and attached the fuel line from the solenoid to it. From my tank to the solenoid is about 12" of line. When the solenoid is open to fill the tank it is slow but keeps up with the truck when traveling. I accidentally left my switch on (open) one day at work - oops. When I got out of work the truck was "full" to the level of the bung / incoming hose and did not fill over that. I did put a shutoff valve coming out of the tank for emergency in the event. I was concerned about that my truck, 2015 Ram would throw a code but in the 1 year of using it, nothing. Even my "distance to empty" gauge in the truck calculates as it fills going down the road. Posted By: lee worsdell on 03/29/18 06:00am bionic man it was on the web page and in the instructions. Not to run open while driving. No big issue I have a cheap code reader I can just clear the code if it happens. But the hose going from the tank is only 1/2 I think very small.
Posted By: dapperdan on 03/29/18 04:52pm I have a 45 gallon RDS with gravity feed, like most had stated, I just open the valve and it feeds the truck tank faster than the truck will consume it. We've had our RDS for over four years now, NO problems yet.

Whoever mentioned venting is "on" to something. Make sure there's a working vent on your bed tank or that may just be your issue.

Posted By: Splashers3 on 03/30/18 04:24am I just had my Titan 40 Gal auxiliary tank installed yesterday (3/29). After some initial problems, in which the installer and I believe the system had to prime (the pump kept kicking off as I tried to transfer fuel about 8 times) itself. Once primed the system worked great - I had no codes kicked by the DIC on my 2017 GMC 3500....and the fuel gauge slowly moved up while I was driving. The system is designed to pump 5 gal and the shut off, and will restart when I hit the power button again....I can manually operate the system as well.

Posted By: Jim&Sharon on 03/31/18 08:19am Wood chip, I think you will like it. I have been using mine for 12 years now, and would not be without it.
I like to start a day of traveling with both the truck tank (34 gal), and the aux. tank (50 gal.) full. That way I can drive as long/far as I want to without worry.
When we stop for lunch, I try to remember to open the aux tank drain into the truck tank to refill the truck tank as we drive.
Then after setting up in the campground, we go out to dinner, and I find a Diesel station that seems to have a lot of customers, and top off the aux tank for the next days travel.

My average driving day pulling a camper,is 5 hours. longest driving day was 12 hours (I don't recommend that), and never had the slightest concern over fuel.

Posted By: ivbinconned on 04/01/18 02:31pm I've installed auxiliary tanks in a number of trucks. It was not mentioned above so I'd like to add a recommendation.
Always install an "inline" filter in the 1/2 inch hose.

Posted By: webecreekin on 04/01/18 04:45pm I have an RDS 45 gal aux tank. I had it in a 2006 Chev--it didn't like for the tank to be left on while traveling. It would go ape after a while by running the fuel gauge down to empty, giving me the fuel low symbol on the dash along with the chime, and so on. I now have it installed on a Ford--it doesn't care. I leave it on all the time and the gauge just shows that it is full. I have a solenoid valve installed in the line with a switch on the dash. My line is 3/8 inch.

Both the OEM fuel tank and the aux tank are vented to the atmosphere. The aux tank came that way from the factory.

Posted By: Splashers3 on 04/02/18 08:20am Good point about having an inline filter for the aux tank....creates double filtration because we still have the truck's own filter system.

I gotta check my Titan system.

Posted By: Splashers3 on 04/02/18 02:38pm My inline filter sits under a cover on top of the tank, next to the pump....very easy to change. Thanks for bringing that issue up.

Posted By: nremtp143 on 04/02/18 03:34pm I put in a 51 gallon gravity flow tank in my '13 F350 last fall. I also installed an electric valve from the Ebay store Valves4projects at around $25 and wired it to one of the upfitter switches. During the install, I worried about trash in the tank, so I put an inline Wix filter in place. The filter slows the refilling of the tank quite a bit and will take it out after several tanks. I'm on tank #4 now. And yes, mine is a long bed.

Posted By: RVCajun on 07/24/18 10:19am I had a 45 gal RDT tank installed from Camping world, which I bought from them. It is a gravity flow with a toggle to open and close the gravity flow.
After I had it installed I filled it up half way with 20 gal of diesel fuel and opened the toggle. It kept my tank gage at full the whole time until I finally used up what was in it.
I read about the vent needed to be open. On top of the tank is an "L" shaped connector that is "ribbed". I got some clear plastic tubing and cut a piece that connected to it and I ran it down the side of the tank. I didn't want any moisture to get into the tank which is why I did that.
Planning on taking a 600 mile trip and having my 26 gal truck tank and 45 gal aux tank filled for the trip. I HATE having to pull over every 200 miles or so to fill up the 26 gal tank which is why I got the aux tank in the first place.
now I can travel all day, pull into a campground, set up and go find a local station carrying diesel and not have to worry about the 5th wheel hitting anything going in or getting out of the station.

BTW I have a 2016 F250 and a 2017 Jayco 315 RLTS North Point

Hey Fred, welcome to the forum. I'm planning on adding a 45 gallon auxiliary later this year.

Posted By: lee worsdell on 07/25/18 05:45am well added the tank 45 gallons bigger then the tank in the truck. have lots of room for my generator. Gravity flow works great as soon as truck gets to just above 1/4 tank open the valve. it will slowly fill and when I see the gauge start going down I no its empty. I do a lot of long distance travel so its great. I can make it from niagra falls to Bristol tn with out stopping for fuel
Posted By: bshgto1 on 07/25/18 06:42pm Of course not telling anyone what to do. But have you seen the amount of rust in your tank after about a year. Your trucks primary fuel filter will get most of it 10 micron but you should change it once a year ,your secondary filter 4 micron will also become really dirty if you let the primary go to long. This is like running sand through your injectors not a good thing for longevity.
I put this motor cycle filter in line and in half a tank it was mostly clogged with rusticals ( think Titanic) when it ran out to mostly empty it was clogged so no fuel would run. Just a thought.

After I saw that I went ahead and bought a little fuel pump connected it to one of the uplifter switches and installed a large Goldenrod transfer tank fuel filter at 10 Micron to catch it all before it gets into the trucks tank and fuel system.

There suppose to be a pic of the little fuel filter starting to clog up with rust after about 17 gals. The tank is 8 months old.
